‘Blu Jay’ Bavaria 34
3 double cabins, shower with hot and cold water, comfortable accommodation. No more than 4 students on board for any course.
Blu-Jay is MCA (Marine Coastguard Agency) Category 2 coded as required for commercial operation and is kept conveniently on the pontoons at Mylor Yacht Harbour 100 metres from the school office.
The Bavaria is a comfortable cruiser designed for easy sailing. Unlike some production boats, mostly everything aboard the Bavaria is right where you need it. Take for example the throttle lever, which is sensibly mounted on the steering pedestal. The chart plotter is also mounted on the pedestal, just where you need it. Anchoring in St Mawes Harbour or sailing around to the Helford Passage for lunch couldn’t be more idyllic.
The same goes for the main sheet traveller. It’s bolted on top of the coach roof just forward of the companionway hatch. This prevents any interference with other lines, and the crew.
The lone helmsman will also appreciate the Bavaria’s design which brings all key control lines back to the cockpit. A series of rope clutches on top of the cabin to either side of the companionway make for easy short-handed sailing.
She has the Volvo Penta 30hp 3 cylinder diesel engine, which gives her the power to motor at 6.5 knots at low cruise revs in moderate sea conditions, and to keep going in rougher sea at 6 knots. Under sail she can make over 7 knots off the wind.
Sleeping accommodation is provided for 6 adults. Comprising of the forward double cabin, and 2 aft double cabins. There is fantastic sailing around the Fal Estuary and Carrick Roads, and it’s easy to find a quiet spot up the Truro River to moor up overnight on one of the visitors pontoons.
